Paris to sponsor lgbt regatta stake race
19 Jan 2008 – Paris; The 5th International LGBT Tournament of Paris, a weekend multi-sport event, will feature rowing as one of the 14 sports disciplines. The regatta will take place on Sunday morning at the Base Nautique in Choisy-le-Roi, a s suburb south of Paris. The venue is easily accessible from Paris using the regional train service.
The format will follow what is traditionally called a “stake race.” Competitors will race to the end, round a buoy, and return, in a timed format style. The race will feature one category: 4x+ (coxed quad). A similar attempt to organize a regatta in 2007 fizzled due to a problem with sourcing boats. This year, the organizing committee has resolved the issue by focusing the race on one boat category.
Racing will take place during the morning followed by a picnic along the rowing basin. Due to tournament event organizational constraints, the registration must close by 16 Mar 2008 so all rowers are encouraged to register very soon.
GLRF visited the venue in December 2006 and pictures are available on the GLRF regatta webpage, 2008 Paris Regate as well as the Community Camera. GLRF will offer its Seat Search service and message forum chat for all members.

Viennese rower joins GLRF
21 Oct 2007 - Vienna; The GLRF worldwide community continued its European expansion with its first membership registration from Austria. The GLRF community now counts members in 24 countries. Although still unconfirmed, it is believed that the new rower may have learned about GLRF through its booth at the 2007 FISA World Masters in Zagreb, Croatia [Hrvatska].
Austria has a rich tradition of rowing and hosts some spectacular regattas in both the north and south of Austria. It is hoped that the addition of Austria to the GLRF community will draw interest from rowers in Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Of course, now that a Global Rower page has been created for Austria, we hope more Austrians will come forward to create a thriving local community within GLRF.

Switzerland joins the GLRF worldwide community
02 Sep 2006 - Zurich; The Swiss have arrived! A rower from Zurich registered with GLRF, and immediately asked if he was the only one. Several rowers from Switzerland competed at the Montreal Outgames and there was interest in including rowing at the EuroGames 2000 in Zurich. So we have to believe that there are many gay and lesbian rowers hitting the water everyday in various parts of Schweiz, or is it Suisse, or is it Svizzera? This new addition to the GLRF worldwide community helps to solidify the membership base in Western Europe, with eight countries now represented.

Hailing from the Csepel Rowing Club in Budapest, this new rower says there are lots of gay rowers and they are best, since they always win the state championships. Excellent, let’s hope he can encourage these others to join GLRF!

A Rower from Prague registers with GLRF
07 May 2006 - Prague; In another sign that GLRF is gaining ground in Central Europe, a rower from the Czech Republic registered with GLRF. The membership marks the 19th country worldwide to have rower representation within GLRF.
Although significant gaps within GLRF’s European membership remain, specifically Spain, Austria, and Switzerland, the addition of the Czech Republic is important because it provides an increased online presence for rowers in a region of Europe that does not sustain as much visibility for gay and lesbian athletes.

2010 Gay Games to be in Koeln, but without rowing.
13 Nov 2005 - Chicago; At the 2005 annual meeting of the Federation of Gay Games, delegates voted to select Koeln, Deutschland as the site for the 2010 Gay Games. Three cities submitted bids to host the 2010 Gay Games: Johannesburg, Koeln, and Paris. Each bid consists of a set of 22 required sports and up to 8 optional sports, that are selected from an official list of authorized additional sports. Rowing is one of the authorized additional sports. Each of the bidding cities selected various additional sports but none included rowing. Both Johannesburg and Paris did not select a full compliment of additional sports, leaving the door open for adding extra sports later on. The Koeln bid included the maximum of 30 sports. When queried why rowing was not included in their bid, when there is a World Class championship rowing facilitiy in the city, Koeln organizers responded that they did not believe they could obtain an adequate number of class A racing boats for rental and that there was not the infrastructure to organize a regatta.
Koeln was the site of the 22nd annual FISA World Rowing Championships 6 - 13 Sep 1998.

City of Copenhagen to host 2nd World Outgames
02 Sep 2005 - Montreal; Officials of the City of Copenhagen announced a partnership with the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association (GLISA) to deliver the 2nd World Outgames in 2009. A formal partnership agreement is to be concluded by year-end. Mr. Martin Geertsen, Mayor of the Committee of Culture and Sport of Copenhagen, was said to be thrilled by the news. He indicated that the event would be a warm up prelude to a possible 2024 International Olympic Games bid.
Copenhagen officials, meeting in Montreal with GLRF representatives, declared without hesitation that rowing would be one of the core sports offered in the 2nd World Outgames. Rowers around the world need only remember the wonderful 2003 Copenhagen Mermaid Regatta to understand that the rowing venue and organizational capacity is already in place and ready to go.
The news of the selection of a city for the 2nd World Outgames was welcomed around the world by athletes and sports teams wondering if the World Outgames would be a one off event. Two cities have already declared their intention to bid for the 2013 3rd World Outgames: Manchester, UK, and Sao Paulo, BR. It is rumored that Berlin is preparing a bid for 2017 4th World Outgames.

EuroGames 2004 Rowing Regatta - a celebration!
31 Jul 2004 - The sun shone brilliantly on Friday and Saturday, 30 - 31 Jul for a flawless EuroGames 2004 rowing regatta. Held at the world-renowned Munich Oberschleissheim, site of the the 2001 FISA World Championships, the competition included 70 rowers from Norge, Danmark, Nederlands, France, Great Britain, Suisse, Australia, USA, and Deutschland. Crews had the chance to train on Friday afternoon before competing on Saturday afternoon. Fifty boats launched for 14 races between 1500h and 1900h, Saturday, 31 Jul, on smooth as glass water.
The most exciting races were the Mens 8+ with Danmark, Great Britain, and Holland all racing for the first place finish, and the Womens 2x with the crews from Holland and Danmark fighting for the gold. In true rowing tradition, the winning boats from each race proceeded directly to the award dock where the rowers disembarked and stood on the same 1-2-3 blue winners’ boxes used at the FISA World Championships.
After an exhausting day of multiple races, with some rowers competing in several races (Orion’s oarsmen were amazing in that regard), everyone gathered for Lowenbrau beer and chat at the finish line. Hip Hip Hoorah to the regatta organizer, Frank Tjaben, and his regatta volunteer team who arranged the boats, set the race schedule, and orchestrated each race from start to finish. That evening, those crews who were not completely spent gathered for the Munich City Launch.
